MSSN of NIJ Chapel holds its 5th Symposium Today

BY Onome Edafie

On the 31st of may 2018, the Muslim students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism held a lively symposium which seems to be far better than the previous ones.

The program titled the role of religion relationships in national development was held at the school hall. The program which started around 1 o’clock and ended 5.30 pm went successfully as Christian students dominated the hall.

Few minutes after the commencement of the program, Brother Imar, an MSSN Amir of Ikeja area, one of the invited guest came on stage to deliver some speech on how the relationships between the two party can impact positively on the nation.

While speaking, the Amir made a comment concerning a recent video of a song title “This is Nigeria" owned by a popular Nigeria musician Falz.  He berated the video for using Muslim hijab girls in the name of passing a message, in the sense that such act can only spoil the name of the religion.

According to him, religion is a way of life and God Almighty created human beings as one and has given us some set of rules that will guide us right.

However, some invited school lecturers also spoke on different angles on the topic and they encouraged students to embrace one another irrespective of their religion or beliefs.

Deities in Ile-Ife are like other messengers of the Supreme Being who were sent to bless mankindand as such should not be portrayed in bad light, Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has said.
Osara popularly referred to as the spirit and the source of the lagoon is one of the deities.
Osara is regarded as the goddess and the source of the lagoon.
Yoruba history has it that, Osara, just like Olokun, was a queen of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race.
She was said to be a lover of children and very accommodating to everyone, hence she was very popular and had a lot of followers and devotees.
Her accommodating nature also explains why all sorts of objects and dirts find their way to the lagoon.
As the custodian of the divine spirits in the land, the Ooni of ife is a major player in the performance of sacrifice to the spirit of Osara, the goddess of the lagoon.
Accompanied by his queen and Osara chief priest, Ooni offers the sacrifice to the spirit of the lagoon deity.
He emerges from the shrine with three doves and lagoon water to bless the people and pray for Ile Ife and Yoruba land.
Osara and Olokun were rival queens of Oduduwa and their rivalry exists till today. This explains why the ocean and the lagoon never mix.
Ooni Ogunwusi insists that Ife deities are like other messengers of the Supreme Being who were sent to  bless mankind and as such should not be portrayed in bad light.
Since he ascended the throne of his forefathers, Ooni Ogunwusi has left no one in doubt about his commitment to the promotion of unity, culture, tradition and religion of the Yoruba race.

Bello accuses civil servants of indolence

Gov. Abubakar Bello

Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger on Tuesday signed the State’s N85.09 billion Budget 2016 into law.

Bello urged the civil servants to work hard toward ensuring that the 2017 budget was signed early.

``I just signed the budget but I am not happy that it has just been signed because I should have signed it long time ago.

``We must work very hard toward the 2017 budget. We should start preparation in time meaning that ministries must work very hard.

``A lot of ministries are still in the habit of 'copy and paste' for many years. If you look at the budget of this state, there had been repetitions going on for over 10 to 15 years now.

``Some sections of the ministries are not doing their work properly. They operate out of laziness’’, he said.

Bello noted that the society was dynamic hence there was no way the budget system 10 years ago would still stand.

``So, please let us start work in time in order to present a budget that would stand the test of time’’, he said.

The governor assured the people of the state that the executive would do everything possible to ensure 100 per cent implementation of the budget.

Alhaji Ahmed Marafa, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, said the budget was increased from N74.74 billion presented by the government to N85.09 billion.

Marafa said this was to accommodate critical areas such as debt servicing, Single Treasury Account and others.

He assured the people of the state that the Assembly would ensure that the budget achieved 98 per cent implementation through their oversight function.

Bello presented a budget of N74.74 billion on Dec. 31, 2015 which the State Assembly later increased to N85.09 billion.
